CJ’s contemporary interpretation of Erbar Grotesk, Dunbar, has a unique family structure with three proportions: Tall and Low—meant for display settings—plus a Text style for smaller settings. With a design space consistent with these three proportions, Dunbar Italic doubles the number of styles in the family, expanding usability and opening up endless typographic possibilities for this geometric sans. The Italics for both the Tall and Low styles are set at a six degree slant while the text at a slightly more exaggerated angle of 10 degrees, optimizing it for smaller settings. The default characters for the M, a, b, and e have special forms designed specifically for the Italics. If you want to mix things up, CJ recommends pairing Dunbar Italic with Gimlet, Kazimir, Miller or Farnham.
